Bear Creek Church Campus

Bear Creek Church Campus

I had the opportunity to tour the Bear Creek Church Campus, a college campus turned housing campus just off Mayowood Road SW. My tour guide was Jeff Urban, Bear Creek Church's outreach pastor. The picturesque campus is located in Ward 1, nearly right in my backyard!

I was fascinated to learn the details of how a small, but mighty church decided to take on this project. Currently, the main building serves as offices and classrooms as well as an area for worship on the 2nd floor. The Rochester Stem Academy is renting office and classroom space as they remodel their location; expected to be completed in 6 months. After their project is complete, there will be office/commercial space to rent for not for profits.

By The Numbers

  • 20,000 square feet (currently) of commercial, living, and office space on campus.

  • 18 one-bedroom units@$575 (utilities included+internet).

  • 13 four-bedroom units@$1,000  (utilities included+internet).

  • 76 beds. Faith Village: six to seven bed units with shared common area@$400/room. (including handicap accessible options.)

As Jeff showed me a few of the open (not for long) apartments, I noticed how each space was warm, clean, and inviting. Jeff explained they take “at risk renters” with their eyes wide open. Certain criteria and an agreed upon plan between Bear Creek and the tenant have worked very well. Bear Creek is also collaborating with other not for profit organizations such as Doc’s Recovery House to provide safe housing options for clients.

What’s Next?

  • Rent office/commercial space to six-eight not-for-profit organizations.

  • Consider partnering to provide a daycare center on site.

  • Launch a capital campaign by first quarter of 2019.

The campus was full of life as students exited their classes; laughing and smiling. A team meeting was taking place as I left the main office, with staff standing in a circle, talking excitedly about projects and to do lists.

I thanked Jeff for taking the time to show me around and I recalled a door I saw on the tour; beautifully adorn with fall decorations with a home sweet home sign. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what we all really crave, a place to call home?
